Despite everything you may think, the keto diet has been connected with improvements in cardiovascular health actually.
May be the keto diet safe for someone with raised chlesterol? Because keto is abundant with fats, including saturated fat and cholesterol within animal-derived foods like eggs and meat naturally, many people shall experience a rise in cholesterol after beginning the keto diet. However, studies recommend the connection between the keto cholesterol and diet is actually positive. For many years cholesterol has gotten as a bad rap, however in reality cholesterol plays many important roles in the physical body.
How does the keto diet affect cholesterol levels? Studies have discovered that the ketogenic diet make a difference cholesterol levels positively, heart health insurance and metabolic health in the next ways: Increases LDL particle size increases pattern Awhich leads to less risk for oxidative stress Improves the LDL to HDL ratio.
Does the ketogenic diet cause raised chlesterol? Does ketosis cause raised chlesterol? Studies also show keto will decrease degrees of triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, blood sugar and reduce body mass index.
Is such thing as a minimal cholesterol keto diet there? Examples include avocado, essential olive oil, nuts, vegetables and seeds. Can the keto diet be best for raised chlesterol? Can keto lower cholesterol? Yes, studies recommend it can. Many factors make a difference cholesterol levels – such as for example genetics negatively, inactivity, diabetes, stress and hypothyroidism – but an unhealthy diet which includes lots of processed food items and is lower in nutrients may be the biggest contributor.
A report published in the journal Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry figured … This study shows the beneficial ramifications of ketogenic diet after its long-term administration in obese subjects with a higher degree of total cholesterol.
Moreover, this study demonstrates that low carb diet is safe to use for an extended time period in obese subjects with a higher total cholesterol level and the ones with normo-cholesterolemia. It could to the high-fat content of the dietary plan due, however, the keto diet overall has results on cardiovascular health markers. Inflammation may be the primary reason behind atherosclerosis, or stiffening and hardening of arteries that accompanies plaque deposits and increases risk for heart attacks.
Avoid foods that are filled with refined vegetable oils, sugar, sodium and artificial ingredients. Include high fiber foodstuffs in every meal, such as for example nuts, seeds, avocado and vegetables. Watch your sodium intake by limiting processed food items. Excellent
If you are able to strictly control blood sugars all the time then cholesterol doesnt become an issue. But in any case my last Trigs were 31 my HDL 77
Triglycerides vs Cholesterol both pathways produce heart disease but Cholesterol is stronger unless your Trigs are very high.
@Elias Contreras no prob brother
Karan Katoch ok thx
@Elias Contreras bro butter is equally as bad if not more…. I m saying just reduce eating oily atuff n also use less of oil in ur food… If u want to use butter then use that also less… Though ur levels r not that bad but still u cn always better urself
Karan Katoch so should i use butter instead of oil?
I did keto for 6 weeks focusing on healthy fats (nuts, avocados, salmon, nut/olive oils, etc) and at the end got my blood work done. Not only is my total cholesterol extremely high now (275), but its also very high LDL (223) very low HDL (31), and on top of that, my triglyceride levels are also high, 105. Why is this happening? If keto is supposed to lower triglycerides and increase HDL, why has the opposite happened to me (plus a huge increase in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol)? Bloodwork from a while prior to keto my total cholesterol was literally in the lower 100s.
Listen to these lectures. Keto is completely the wrong approch.
Maybe you have Hypercholesterolemia genect high cholesterol
Skeptivore nuts can be inflammatory
Low cholesterol is not good. You need LDL for proper brain function. Watch/listen here:
If you were losing weight prior to having your lipids drawn, the increases may be due to mobilization of fatty acids out of adipose tissue and may decrease again after your weight has stabilized. For an in-depth review of what to expect, you can head to this post on our blog:
What do you mean by healthy carbs, and what do you regard as keto. Im asking because many of the popular keto diets are not at all ketogenic due to way too much recommended plant food. True ketosis is attained via meat and water; its really quite simple and you wont have any ill effects. Read Kevin Stocks take on blood labs, and watch Dr. Nadir Ali (cardialogist; he covers all you are concerned about).
Keto is plant based. Where else would you get those 15 carbs?
All carbs become just one thing, glucose in the blood. The only difference is the time it takes to get there. I eat about 15 total carbs in a day and usually 14 of them are from green above ground vegetables of which I eat a fair amount. I am quite diligent in what I eat and in continuous ketosis. Yes there are carnivores, but that is not necessary for ketosis.
Hi Alba! To better understand what we mean by a well formulated ketogenic diet, you can check out this post on our blog:
The goal is for nutritional ketosis, which is defined as a betahydroxybutyrate level greater than 0.5 mmol/L.
I been on strict 20 grams per day total carbs for nine months. Just took a Boston heart and my trigs are way higher
Hdl is lower and total cholesterol and ldl and small dense ldl are way higher
So I am miffed – going back to the drawing board to see what I need to tweak
Not bashing keto at all just my experience
My ldl went up aswell ..
Listen to these lectures first.
@John Clendenning Please let me know what you find out. I am going to reduce the MUFA oils I was consuming and up my carbs to net 30 of all veg and see what happens in three months. Thanks for getting back to me a well, sir.
@Ian, that’s interesting, I am experiencing the same thing. Wife and I had bloodwork done at about 6 months into Keto, she was golden, and all my numbers were great except my lipid panel. Trigs way high, HDL way low…. terrible ratio
Went back for for blood test last month, at month 8 of Keto and fasted 13 hours before tests this time (wasn’t asked to fast the first time?) and trigs had dropped but were still considered crazy high – HDL up very slightly 🙁
Never had any issues before, and not doing Keto for weight issues, just health and longevity… my most recent cholesterol tests prior were in 2016 for an insurance policy and all numbers were bang on in normal ranges
Trying to figure this out, and have been studying from Ivor Cummins and Dave Feldmans among others to root out the cause for this in my metabolism and find a proper solution.
This cholesterol procedure “Hοzantο Axy” (Google it) is an exciting new guide I simply began to try out. Specifically, I commenced employing it to reduce my cholesterol at the recommendations of my DOCTOR. Everyday, I have to take a caplet. This really should be done for two months. My cholesterol lowered Thirty points. I will unquestionably go on utilizing this item and as well recommend it to my family. .
for people who still have high triglycerides and low HDL you must be still using canola oil and bads oil, only use coconut oil and real butter not margarine real butter and it will work.
I happen to be employing this extraordinary cholesterol guide “Hοzantο Axy” (Google it) to help lower my negative cholesterol and increase my good cholesterol. For several months of having it, my cholesterol level has improved significantly. My vitality is improving and my positive mind is really much better at this moment. .
I’m one of those few people with continually rising LDL on Keto. It’s now up to 388 and total cholesterol 499. I’ve resisted my PCPs request to go on a statin, but now I have a cardiologist telling me he thinks it’s genetic and is pushing for a statin. I’ve stopped Keto to increase fiber with healthy carbs, and have repeat labs this week. So much conflicting information makes it very distressing. 🙁
I agree…all the conflicting information is horrible. My PCP is all about lowering my LDL with drugs. I was on a statin drug (been off it for months now) and I ended up becoming hypothyroid and depressed and of course my PCP prescribed drugs for both of these problems. I took myself off (with kowledge of my PCP) everything and feel so much better. However, I still need to manage my intake of carbs/sugar. As of today he wants to put me on Zetia (non-statin) which I need to research. I really want to manage my cholesterol naturally. My HDL 71/LDL 188/ TRi 92/Ratio 3.9/ Overall 277. Hes truly concerned, but I just do not trust the science he goes by and do NOT want to go on another drug. Any advice?
50 to 100 grams of carbs is not Keto!
Keto isnt good for you unless you exercise regularly
@Clay Butler Clay, optimal HDL-C for women is 50-70, everything above 70 is atherogenic.
Ive been on keto for 8 months. On a recent lipids panel, my HDL increased from 81 to 103! My doctor says hes never had a patient with HDL of 81, let alone 103. Total cholesterol 208 (103 of which are HDL) and triglycerides went from 143 to 52. Can HDL be too high?? And if so, what is too high for a women? I tried Googling and get conflicting views on this subject.
I’m posting here after much consideration… I’m a 57-year-old female who hasn’t been to a doctor in 19 years until recently. I’m usually on a 16-hour fast, but not in keto; I had my first bloodwork done and got a frantic call from my doctor & he wanted to put me on statin, but I asked for 3 months to “fix” it myself. These were my results after some 15-hour fast with just a cup of tea: total cholesterol 335; triglycerides 51; HDL 104; VLDL 10; LDL 221; A1c 5.4; glucose 83; urinalysis for glucose was negative; my BMI is 20.1
The doctor said I can get a heart attack. I don’t think so. At the same time, I’m a bit concerned since I haven’t been to a doctor in so long, and I don’t have my own “base” to compare to. I enjoy my current eating plan of healthy fats, veges, grass-fed meat, and at least 2 free-range eggs a day. I do yoga/Pilates 6x/week. Your thoughts?
I’m reading yours cause I am also 57 but obviously a mail it would be great if you knew the numbers before you started but I guess that’s not possible anyway so I’ve been on the keto diet for almost a year and my LDL one up and after a bunch of reading I have found out there’s two types of LDL‘s so there’s a small one that’s that’s that’s not good and then there’s a fluffy one that is no problem and those tend to go up if you’re on a keto diet and off that helps but my LDL went from 53 to 100after being on the keto. I’ve also been doing intermediate fasting where dinner is my last meal and I don’t eat again until lunch and not that I was trying to lose weight but you definitely melt off the fat on that plan. If I were you I’d give it another three months and get my blood tested again and see if there’s been any movement… all the best 57 we’re not so old but we’re not so young.
It is my own objective to lessen my bad cholesterol level and increase the good ones. I achieved my mission due to this extraordinary cholesterol procedure “Hοzantο Axy” (Google it) . I have used it for couple of weeks now and my cholesterol has increased. My strength is continually increasing and also my thinking is so much improved at this moment. .
This unique cholesterol tutorial “Hοzantο Axy” (Google it) is not only top quality answer yet cost-effective too. I started to employ this following my personal doctors ideas to lower my blood cholesterol level. I took it for more than Fourteen days. NO doubt, this helps a whole lot! I sensed less pain and became much more dynamic daily! The final results of my labs revealed that I am getting better. .
Most likely, if your LDL rises, its due to high energy expenditure vs energy intake (not eating enough). Ive found it easy to maintain calorie restriction with low carb/keto. Increase calories and recheck LDL.
In an effort to raise the existence of my “good” cholesterol and also reduce the “bad” cholesterol I possess, I tested applying this extraordinary cholesterol procedure “Hοzantο Axy” (Google it) . I am not certain if it is executed like this way. Ever since I have not used it and so I don’t have any idea if this will work. I cannot delay to have my cholesterol check again in one or two months. Based on everything Ive read through, this will work well. .
I got my blood work back after 1 year on keto/IF. It was all within normal limits except iron, which is an eternal struggle. My tri/HDL=0.7 and remnant cholesterol was 13. Triglycerides went way down from 1 year ago and my HDL went from below normal to normal range.
Going to a doctor is kind of like taking your car to an unknown auto shop and saying Can you find anything wrong. Todays medical system is so full of chit that I think in 50 years MDs will look back at this time as the Dark Ages…My triglycerides are just under 2000 and I am 62, had a full cardiac angiogram and its clean as a whistle. My Cholesterol are 300 plus, and neither has anything to do with cardiac issues.
Listen to these lectures
Your triglycerides are, just under 2000 is that correct? I too have high triglycerides, the last three or four have run from a high of over 1200 to a low of 135 and I have recently started a very low carbohydrate diet. The 1200 number was drawn unexpectedly and I had not been on a proper fast. But either way, that number is alarmingly high. I am focused on reducing the carbs in all forms and I intend to follow a very strict protocol before any blood draws. The Prep will consist of fasting for 14-16 hours, no meds or supplements that might artificially increase (beta-blockers, coffee…) or decrease (Niacin…) the numbers but otherwise not changing what would be my normal diet.
I am diabetic.on intermittent fasting, play tennis 4 hours a week, walk one hour every day, not taking any meds for diabetes as I am maintaining A1_C 6 by diet. My triglycerides have risen 200 points in the past 3 months 299-507. Taking 4000 units omegas COQ10 200 mg/day
listen to these lectures
eat pastured meat and get off the supplements.
I started Keto at 45yrs old Im now 47 been a diabetic for 20yrs. I can
tell you for years i had extremely high Cholesterol and Triglycerides.
My total Cholesterol avg 320 and Triglycerides avg 600-800 3 times a
year being tested, I had many medications and diet plans but nothing
worked. keto 6 months later my Cholesterol dropped to 124 and
Triglycerides to 115. HDL and LDL are all now A+. I went from
150units of insulin a day to around 40. I have maintained these numbers
in my blood tests every 4-6 months. I can actually workout and feel
good, no more meds or pain pills, all of my inflammation is 98%
eliminated. BP is normal stopped all my BP meds 1 year ago still doing
great. My doctor asked me what i did, I said Doc. remember the diabetic
diets you had me go on and the training for those well i stopped that
and went on Keto. He looked at me in a daze he said i never recommended
it because its bad for you, i said show me where its bad on all of my
tests. He said I cant and I have to study this diet more, I said i
told you I was getting off the poisons your trying to push to treat the
symptoms not the problem, he shook my hand and said awesome job.
@TKD Guy Thanks for your comment. Obviously each person will have different response but limiting carbs to less than 25g per day is very bad idea unless under medical supervision to check blood work. Be careful.
@Alex Fernando How does eating high fat make sense? Totally illogical. Very few natural foods are high fat.
@DARELL CANUP he’s right. I get my cholesterol and triglycerides checked at minimum 2x per year. Sometimes 4. The keto diet brought my triglycerides to a new record high (for me) of 410.
Then one of my coworkers went on a strict keto diet and he got his cholesterol checked. His cholesterol also got wrecked.
Keto does raise cholesterol and not in a good way.
Gottfried Smith Phenomenal job you have truly done for yourself! I’m 46 years old and just started Keto 5 weeks ago. For the 1st time in my life I feel like I’ve found something that could help me fix my health for good. The science makes total sense and I’m totally 100% bought in. I’m very excited.
@TB1M1 Very accurate lie. TC/HDL ratio absolutely does NOT worsen. I have yet to see a single case of that happening.
what if my HDL is 65 and TG are 65? I have an LDL of 188
What is your Total Cholesterol?
That ratio looks great keep it up!
Tracy Kowald Hi Tracy! We aren’t able to provide specific medical advice via this forum. We’d recommend discussing your lipid values with your healthcare provider!
Thanks for the Video! Forgive me for the intrusion, I would appreciate your thoughts. Have you heard about – Riddleagan Surviving Death Remedy (should be on google have a look)? It is an awesome one of a kind product for reducing your cholesterol level without the hard work. Ive heard some super things about it and my close friend Aubrey finally got astronomical results with it.
SADLY what Ive SEEN by reading a lot of comments about KETO is that MOST people who said KETO did not work for them is that they were NOT doing KETO they were doing THEIR WAY of keto.
PatriotMarine yes I agree! I work with people to help with keto or fasting and I could write a book on all the “INVENTED” versions of keto along with people who think it’s ok to eat fruit in a fast
…and or following popular keto diets that are anything but ketogenic with much plant foods high in carbohydrates. Im carnivore last 6 months, I am healing many diagnosed diseases and free of medications and supplements. Im 60 and have never felt better; Im literally reversing aging.
i try to follow a low-carbohydrate diet, yet my HDLs are low, while my triglycerides are high
Not to pick on you but you’re not doing the keto diet yet so your results are what they are because you’re still eating a lot of garbage food but today’s a new day
@nakedBison69so why the fuck are u complaining? U idiot
no, because i have zero will power. what i mean is, when it comes to buying food, i am almost 100% keto…but when food comes to me for free, such as when my co-workers being in junk food for all of us to eat, i devour it within seconds
you saying youre trying but are you actually doing? Are you fully keto?
howmuch
I just got my 1 year Keto Lipid Panel. I am a little freaked out. Total Cholesterol 244 HDL 71 Triglycerides 54 and LDL 158 CHOL/HDLC ratio 3.4 is this bad?
Before Keto my total was 190s-200s
Hi this is currently happening to me my cholesterol is 248 Ldl is 158 before keto i had normal numbers what has helped you?
@Erast Van Doren Thats so amazing because none of that has happened with me. Maybe Im just a weird oddity. All of my numbers are beautiful I no longer a diabetic I no longer have inflammation or joint pain the neurology is completely gone Ive been able to easily and successfully lose over 30 pounds and 44 off my body as well as reduced my arrhythmia by 30% so so theres that
Of course it bad. Eating large amounts of fat is always bad. And if LDL-C is above 70 – your atherosclerosis will progress.
Unfortunately, we cant provide specific medical advice via this forum. However, you may find this post on our blog helpful:
Ive been on keto for 6 months eating mainly grass fed meats and fish and just got blood results back. Im also pretty active and weightlift as well. I was fit before keto and didnt lose weight. My total cholesterol is 227, ldl is 190, hdl is 25 and trigs are 61. My HDL trig ratio is 2.44 which i think is pretty bad. What could I be doing wrong and how should i improve this?
Elizabeth Sady so what kind of proteins should i eat? My trigs are 166, ive been doing keto for 1 month and a half
Yes, Stop eating animal proteins. These ladies are taking nonsense. HDL should be high triglycerides as low as possible.
my cholesterol total went up from 208 to 253 and I have been on keto diet for most of the year. My doctor said to lower my fat intake… well, I cant justify doing that. I consume healthy saturated fats, avoid dairy mostly except grass-fed butter with my coffee.
You are basically eating a 1960s american high fat diet. It is a disaster long term Listen to these lectures. Keto is completely the wrong approch.
But the high cholesterol isnt good for you
Okay so why would triglycerides rise to 206 and my total cholesterol to 288 on a keto diet, because that is what happened and I’m very scared, I’m 20.
Listen to these lectures. Keto is completely the wrong approch.
@Elias Contreras Rice, beans have all the essential amino acids. Rice is superior though
@Alba Maria del Valle Actually It means a lot even if just as a marker look at the studies published by Cleveland clinic. Blood samples were taken a month before multivessel bypass grafts. High Cholesterol , high triglycerides, hypertension. Abnormal TC/HDL ratios… Keto produces these bad ratios by default!!
Dont be scared. Total cholesterol means very little. Ratios are more important. LDL cholesterol is necessary for proper brain function, and prevents dementia. Watch this:
Skeptivore my cholesterol is 300+ these days, my tris are 70-80. & I’m told I’m fine. So take what you will from that.
I began eating a HFLC ketogenic diet on August 23rd 2018 where my total cholesterol was 156 months earlier. The reason for going on keto was not so much to lose weight but inflammation where Ive had a history of diabetes with a kidney/pancreas transplant x 2. A few months after going strict ketovore, eating 50-70% of my TDEE ub fat I had another lipid test on December 13th revealing a total of 770 where LDL was 658!
Im 52 years old and in pretty good shape with a BMI of 23. I work out with resistance training 5-6 days per week. Ive not heard anyone yet who has had their numbers go this high after going on a HFLC diet?
@John Dibert Congratulations…lol . According to Dr. William Davis, a board certified cardiologist and author of Wheat Belly, he says that if you are keeping tris at 60 or less, you are golden… How do you do this? By limiting your carbs to around 15g per meal.
However, there are also supplements that can help your mitochondria metabolize fats better. Check out the benefits of L Carnotine and Carnosine as well as Glutathione. I buy the pure bulk powder froms and mix it in water.
My ldl on the keto diet is 582. Hdl and triglycerides were both fine. My doctor is going nuts
@Brightonketo Meat4Life My last lipid panel from a week ago was as follows.
Total = 466
Tris = 55
HDL = 93
LDL = 362
I eat about 2000 calories per day and have been maintaining less than 50g net carbs while also keeping my fats to 100g or under. I really dont consume any exogenous fats except a little MCT oil in my coffee. All the fat is primarily from the sardines, salmon and chicken I eat. Although 50 percent or more of my calories come from these high quality protein where I limit beef consumption.
466 to most is too high but I eat very clean and workout a lot. It could be I have the ApoE4 gene?
Yes my friend and her trigs were lot befor keto, what did you find out? 🙂
My HBA1C decreased from 10.2 to 7.5 with keto low carb and Fasting but my triglycerides increased from 92 to 240 after one month. What is the problem?
Please fasting for 12 hours before take blood test…
That doesnt make any fucking sense. Triglycerides cannot go up if ur doing lower then 20 or 30carbs per day keto diet.
So not true, my HDL dropped big time and LDL increased big time.
